A series of three attachment webinars by attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist and writer Linda Cundy. Linda has taught on psychotherapy courses for almost thirty years, including a long association with the Wimbledon Guild where she developed and led a Post Graduate Diploma in Attachment-Based Therapy. She has written / edited three books to date, Love in the Age of the Internet: Attachment in the Digital Era; Anxiously Attached: Understanding and Working with Preoccupied Attachment; and Attachment and the Defence Against Intimacy: Understanding and Working with Avoidant Attachment, Self-Hatred and Shame. Linda has worked in the areas of adult mental health and bereavement, and has been appointed Attachment Theory Consultant to the Bowlby Centre.

Day 1: OVERVIEW OF CLASSICAL ATTACHMENT THEORY, research and contemporary theory plus Linda's model for therapy. More than half the population have a history of insecure attachment - preoccupied, avoidant / dismissing or disorganised / unresolved - including most people who come for therapy. Our work needs to help them develop security. This first session presents the therapeutic ingredients and areas of focus that promote secure attachment. There are certain situations where clients with a secure history may seek therapy, for instance following an assault or bereavement, and this will also be addressed. The basis for this model in Bowlby’s original theory, attachment research and contemporary developments will be explained.

16th March 2021 - 9.30am – 1pm

Cost: £35

Day 2: AMBIVALENT ATTACHMENT, the impact of trauma, and specific areas of focus in therapeutic work.“Preoccupied” people who have a history of anxious-ambivalent attachment have particular anxieties, defences, ways of relating to other people and themselves that can cause great distress and also make them more vulnerable to trauma. This session focuses on identifying this pattern of attachment, increasing awareness of the dynamics involved, and fine-tuning the model presented in Day 1 to address the specific needs of this group of clients. The impact of trauma will also be discussed, both childhood trauma (the combination of Preoccupied Attachment with Unresolved Trauma is linked to certain personality disorders) and later traumatic experiences. There will be opportunities for attendees to apply the concepts to their own clinical practice.

13th April 2021 - 9.30am – 1pm

Cost: £35

Day 3: AVOIDANT ATTACHMENT, the impact of trauma, and specific areas of focus in therapeutic work. “Avoidant” or Dismissing individuals are least likely to ask for help and can be more difficult to engage. Defences protect the self from getting close to others but also from painful feelings arising internally. This session will enable participants to recognise these clients and gain a deeper understanding of them, so that those who do come for therapy can be helped to benefit from it. The therapeutic model presented on Day 1 needs to be adapted to address their specific difficulties. The impact of trauma will also be discussed, both childhood trauma (the combination of Dismissing Attachment with Unresolved Trauma is linked to certain personality disorders) and later traumatic experiences. There will be opportunities for attendees to apply the ideas to their own clinical practice.

20th April 2021 - 9.30am – 1pm

Cost: £35
